Pipe Freezing Technology
Pipe freezing refers to a process whereby pipes are deliberately
frozen to stop the flow of water. (If you are suffering from frozen
pipes at home you need to get them lagged! Contact Blockbuster for a
free quote :-) Deliberate freezing has a number of
advantages to plumbers:
- You are able to isolate areas without switching everybody off.
Useful in townhouse or factory complexes if there are no
isolator valves.
- You do not have to drain systems where there is uncontrolled
backflow.
- You can isolate leaks easily.
- You do not impact on operations that require a constant water
supply.
- Water pipes from 15mm to 63mm can be frozen. Larger sizes on
enquiry. - see below.
- Pressure of up to 10 Bar.
How Does it work?
The most common way is to use Carbon Dioxide (dry ice) to lower
the temperature on the outside of the pipe. A special collar is
installed and the carbon dioxide is released into the collar. This
causes an ice plug to form inside the pipe and this stops the flow
of water. The pipe can then be worked on while the plug is kept
frozen. When the plumber is finished he switches off the carbon
dioxide and the plug melts in about 15 minutes.
In the case of larger pipes (75mm +) we may be able to freeze
them, but it's a different process and a lot more costly. Send me an
email with the details of your requirements.
Note that we ONLY freeze WATER pipes.
